We should have seen this coming.

I read on Time.com that the state Department of Education for Indiana has said teaching cursive is no longer required. So schools in Indiana can decide if they would like to teach cursive. I haven't written in cursive since I passed notes in 7th grade. After that it was print or nothing. Even my signature is mostly print.

The article states that while leaving cursive instruction at the door students 'will be expected to become proficient in keyboard use.' By that I assume they mean typing. Although it does conjure up an interesting image of a fourth-grader using a keyboard as a paddle while canoeing up the Mississippi.

Yeah, probably they mean typing.

What do you picture a keyboard being used as?

Sorry, I actually pictured a keyboard. Like the one I'm typing on now. :)

I can see it being used as a bat for baseball... though I don't know how that's going to replace cursive.

They burn really pretty. Lots of different colors. While not a school sanctioned use, it was fun.

The only use I saw for cursive was that it forced kids to develop more manual dexterity, so their print was actually legible.

Hopefully the next generation will still be able to read eachother's handwriting.

Brinley started learning cursive in first grade and I'm really glad they're teaching it. Like Jeramie said, it really does improve their print writing. Brinley's handwriting is much better than mine was when I was in 1st grade.
